Coley & Gill Vanilla Scented Candle Review

UPDATE 22/10/2015You’ve probably found this page after searching for something relating to Coley & Gill.

We’ve been contacted too many times regarding this brand after writing one review. No, we are not Coley & Gill, I swear! We are two ladies who once purchased a candle and wrote a review about it.  If you have any problems with your Coley & Gill products we’d advise that you bring them back to the store where you purchased them. Please, PLEASE do not send us threatening emails and/or pictures of your phlegm/mucus or any other bodily fluids. (Yes, this happened!) We’re too sweet and innocent to deal with stuff like that lol. Remember, you get what you pay for. – S&S

Another of my candles from my Poundland visit and this one because it’s Vanilla was Coley & Gill Vanilla Scented Candlethe one I was most excited about. I shouldn’t have been…

When I picked it up I couldn’t really smell the vanilla which in many circumstances would have made me put it down but it was only one pound. When I was lighting the candle I did notice that the design of the candle made a pretty pattern that made me say oooh! But the smell was where exactly?! Also the wick kept disintegrating and I ended up with speckled wax. Coley & Gill Vanilla Scented CandlesUrgh. I have a teeny tiny spoon that I use to scoop it out, I don’t have OCD but that makes me get very OCD.

When I got about 3/4 down the candle it started to smell but it wasn’t vanilla, it was a burning smell. I know how to burn a candle, trim a wick etc and as soon as it started smelling like a bonfire it was in the bin! Obviously I blew out the flame and let it cool first.

It was just £1 so I don’t feel too annoyed but I did a bit of digging and found out that they do quite a few scents and started to think why bother, seems like a company that needs to perfect it’s candle quality first before going into lots of scents. Particularly as they don’t smell! Even for £1 I’m disappointed not by the price but by how much I love candles and when I get one that’s not so good, it makes me have a sad face.

Oh and want to eat cake.

  1. Sorry to bump an old post but I have recently fallen foul of these candles too, and just to warn everyone: COLEY AND GILL IS A FAKE POUNDSHOP BRAND.
You’ll see lots of different items with brand logos you’ve never heard of but you assume they at least exist, nope, they’re all pumped out of the same poundland factory and no assurance of quality. I had some joy with the burning oils they make but ebay offers equal prices and far better quality so don’t be sucked in by this cheap offer, people!

    Love the blog btw! xx

    1. Hi! We’re sorry you’ve had problems with them. 🙁 I tried their tealights and they weren’t too bad, no throw at all but they come in cute colours. Oh I got their room sprays for our bathrooms and they are quite nice, I was actually gonna review them on here, but I wouldn’t waste my money on their larger candles especially after Sarah’s review and now after your comment.

I have noticed that a lot of pound shop candles are basically the same candle in the same glass holder but in different boxes and I avoid them cause you just know they’re cheaply mass produced, I’d rather save my few euros and buy a lovely handmade candle. 🙂

Awh thank you, we love getting comments! Please let us know if there is anything else you’d like to see reviewed and we can look in to it.

      Hugs – Sam x

  2. i bought the toasted marshmallow scented oil and this smells really nice
many scented candles just dont smell when lit not just the cheaper versions
    # anyway would recommend the scented oil

  3. Hi I have a serious complaint about coley and Gill unscented tea light candles but cannot find email address . I have used 4 of them and they have gone up in flames and caused serious damage if anybody can help

    1. Hi Christine. Coley & Gill is a brand owned by the poundshop type places, we’d advise bringing them back to the store you bought them from and asking for a number for head office and/or a contact email address.

  4. I have been using Coley and Gill for a while and I have never had a problem with them so love em and my favourite scent is french vanilla it smells gorgeous and I would recommend it

    1. Oh it’s great to hear that you’ve had a good experience with them. 🙂 We’ll keep an eye out for the French Vanilla scent and maybe give it a go.

  5. I buy coley&gill products every week from poundshops never had a problem with them I also buy handmade products from a friend of mine who runs her own business just mix and match x

    1. Hi Chloe. I’m pretty sure these are paraffin wax, you’d be best contacting Coley & Gill, but given the quality and the price I’d be certain they’re paraffin.
